The Diamond City
The capital city of the Northern Cape is most famous for its diamond mining from the world's largest hand dug hole which all started in 1871 when the digging began. From these prospected diggings, Kimberley was the first in creating the South African Stock exchange
Kimberley is a city of rich history and many firsts and so, on the 2nd of September 1882 it was the first city in the Southern Hemisphere to install electric street lights. Other electrical advancements were a first. First electric tram system in South Africa. First city to have an automatic telephone exchange running in South Africa. First city airport in SA to have lighting equipment and thus first known night landing by a pilot.
